Europe’s most strategic dataset just moved onto infrastructure Europe controls.

  • ESA awarded OVHcloud and CGI a 30-month contract, reported on 28 September, to build the computing platform for Europe’s Earth observation data.
  • The system, Digital EO, combines storage, compute and AI tooling. It runs in France, Germany and Italy, with support operations in Poland.
  • Value is described only as being in the multi-million euro range. ESA did not publish a figure.
  • ESA expects the archive to pass 500 petabytes by 2035. It will feed Copernicus and Destination Earth.
  • The award follows an April European Commission tender worth up to EUR 180 million for sovereign cloud services, scored on legal control, supply-chain transparency and non-EU influence.
